Organise your own walk

As shown by the active participation of around 500 schools in 2012, Walking for Water has proven its worth as a powerful yet simple concept to get children focused on, and engaged in, the global water crisis. While learning about water and sanitation issues, they raise money from friends and family to fund real development projects. Aqua for All and partner organisation Akvo are scaling up the 2013 event, making it possible for even more schools around the world to participate.

Guidelines

If some simple guidelines are followed, organisations are free to use the concept and logo of Walking for Water. The guidelines were created to both ensure the openness of the campaign — any school, development organization or charity can be the initiating partner — and a balance between fundraising and education.

Manuals

We have created a set of manuals (for support centers, for schools, and for guest lecturers) with which other organisations around the world can organise their own Walking for Water event or improve upon the concept. We can also help with providing backpacks and publicity materials.

Projects

Each school can choose its own specific drinking water and/or sanitation project which must be aimed to improve the water or sanitation situation of the poor in rural or peri-urban (unplanned urban) areas in the developing world. To get an idea of appropriate projects, check out the project page on this website.  All the projects for which the children raise funds for will become visible at Akvo.org. This allows schools to see how others have done elsewhere and children get the chance to track how the projects develop over time.

Ways to participate

There are lots of different ways your organisation can be part of Walking for Water:

  • Coordinate Walking for Water events in your area – from one to as many, in as many regions, as you like
  • Partner with schools, community groups or other organisations to host events
  • Match fund the money children raise and magnify and enhance your own Corporate Social Responsibility contribution
  • Participate in guest lessons – pass on your expertise and tell children about your projects
  • Sponsor publicity materials, backpacks, teaching resources
